Muzikal History 1986 Part I
Cars, Fire, and Friends

Have you ever wanted to put a hit out on your car?

Mrs. Muzikdude had a car when we were first married and at least once a week we discussed having her brother steal it and push it off of a California cliff.

The car was nothing but trouble from day one.

The engine leaked a steady trickle of oil onto the exhaust which caused it to smoke like crazy, especially on hot days. Since we lived in Las Vegas, everyday was a hot day. (I stopped at gas stations to fill the oil and check the gas.)

On one particularly hot day, a friend and I were headed to the store (probably for auto parts) and the car began billowing clouds of smoke. I assured my friend that it was a normal occurrence. We were sitting at a light waiting to make a left turn when a pedestrian who was crossing in front of us pointed at the car and mouthed something to me. I rolled down the window and said “It always does that” to which he replied “It always catches fire?”

I opened my door and leaned out to look under the car. Sure enough, there were flames. I told my friend that the car was on fire and he panicked. He swung his door open and stumbled out onto the pavement, into traffic, yelling profanities. I just got out, crossed the street, sat on the curb, and watched it burn. All the while my friend had frantically run into the 7 Eleven to get a fire extinguisher. He came out empty handed yelling at the top of his voice “What kind of commercial establishment doesn’t have a fire extinguisher?” He turned back toward the store pointing his finger "I'm calling the fire marshall!"

The lack of an extinguisher was of no consequence as the fire had gone out on it’s own. I got back into the car and pulled into the 7 Eleven parking lot to pick up my friend. He wouldn’t get in the car. He was on the phone asking his wife to come pick him up.

It's funny how a simple brush with death can cause a friend to lose trust in you.

To be continued…
